LONGTIME Sowetan nation-building projects ally Liberty has enhanced the community outreach efforts of the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services' dog unit with the donation of two trailers.

Liberty, who sponsored the highly respected Sowetan Education Supplement for many years, handed over the trailers at the unit's base at Florida Park Fire Station in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg this week.

Neels de Klerk, who commands the unit - which is reportedly unique in Africa - said at the ceremony that the donation had boosted its search and rescue capability.

"The trailers will enable the unit to respond appropriately to situations, and dispatch more than one dog when needed."
