Car sales may be down

MANUFACTURING statistics and vehicle sales are among the main data due for release this week.

The week kicks off with the release of vehicle sales for December from Naamsa.

Standard Bank economists say passenger car sales might have been disappointing in December after increasing by 28,9percent year-on-year in November but declining 4percent on a month-on-month basis.

They say the adverse effect of the implementation of the carbon emissions tax late last year might also be reflected in the December sales figures.

"The effect of the two interest rate cuts in the second half of 2010 could be partially offset by higher vehicle prices and sales might not be particularly inspiring in 2011," they noted.

Adcorp is also expected to release the December employment index today.
