Beware of invisible promotion

Management Tip of the Day - You may have been promoted without realizing it.

New responsibilities, broader job scope, and shifts in focus are often granted as job perks. But they can be a burden if you are not adequately prepared to take them on and not compensated appropriately.

Periodically take a look at your job and ask yourself whether your role has expanded and how much it differs from your official job description.

If you see significant changes, don't wait for your boss to recognize that you've been invisibly promoted.

Put together some bullet points describing the expanded responsibilities. Have an honest discussion with your boss about what skills and resources you need to live up to your changed role.

By taking charge in this way, you can make sure you get the recognition and support you need.
