Ngoma back and taking things a step at a time

Cape Town City winger Aubrey Ngoma is delighted to be back after three months out with an injury.

Ngoma underwent knee surgery early in July at a time when he was starting to get regular Bafana Bafana call-ups.

He had to withdraw from the Bafana squad that participated in the Cosafa Cup.

Ngoma had also made the squad that beat Nigeria 2-0 in Uyo in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The 28-year-old had his first training session last Friday and will be training for the second time today.

He comes back at a time when he could be available as City begin their Telkom Knockout defence with an away fixture against Baroka in Polokwane on Sunday.

Ngoma was the competition's player of the tournament last season, but he told Sowetan yesterday that he's not going to put himself under pressure.

"It felt good to be back training with the guys after I had been out for three-and-a-half months," said Ngoma, who scored seven goals and made 16 assists during the 2016/17 season.

"I don't want to put pressure on myself. It's not like I was out for three days, you know. I was out for a very long time and the first thing I want to do is get my match fitness and once I'm fit, I can start kicking on," he said.

"I just want to get back on the field even if it's five minutes. I have to work hard and get back to full fitness," he added.

In Ngoma's absence, Lyle Lakay has been doing great for the club. Lakay scored his first goal in the 2-1 loss to Chippa United at the weekend.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic man also has four assists to his name.

In Ngoma's absence, City have struggled, losing the MTN8 final to SuperSport United and the last two matches against Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United.
