Swallows in real trouble

You have to wonder whether the Moroka Swallows webmaster jinxed the club after last night's catastrophic result.

Hours before their 1-1 draw here against the University of Pretoria, the Dube Birds posted a match preview suggesting the opposition were favourites.

"University of Pretoria will be out to add to Moroka Swallows' woes," the article on their official website read.

AmaTuks, who were also desperate for points, did not register a victory but they have more than just added to the misery of one of the Premier Soccer League's oldest clubs. Vuyisile Wana's opener in the 23rd minute was a goal needed to set the tone for Swallows.

A well-worked team effort with Wana finishing off Siyabonga Nomvethe's defence-splitting pass came undone when the Dube Birds were again caught flat-footed at the back.

Swallows went into the break in the lead, a good omen, and perhaps only needed to read the game better to protect their lead.

It was not to be.

Atusaye Nyondo bagged the leveller five minutes into the second half, outsprinting the Swallows defence to calmly put the ball past goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

The upcoming three games for Swallows, if they win, might only help them avoid automatic relegation.

But with this kind of performance, to borrow from the webmaster, their woes are bound to continue.

Coach Craig Rosslee will probably take a point, but when you are desperate to avoid the drop, throwing away two points at this stage is as good - or bad - as a defeat.
