Kaizer Chiefs winger Mandla Masango says “war” breaks out in his household whenever there is a Soweto Derby, as his father is a fanatical Orlando Pirates supporter.

A Chiefs stalwart, Masango says the family was once again be split down the middle when the two Soweto giants met..

“There's always war because most of my friends are Orlando Pirates supporters. Even my dad is an Orlando Pirates supporter,” Masango laughs.

“I think it's good for both parties. Actually it gives me that motivation factor when you come up against your friends and who they support.

“I maybe have the power to influence the match so it's going to be interesting.”

But despite the occasional family feud, Masango said he always had the support of his father.

“He always says, whenever there is a derby match, ‘blood is thicker than water,' so you can read between the lines.”

There was, however, a price to pay for either party, depending on the outcome of the derby.

“Let's say, when Chiefs wins, I have to punish him. So maybe make him wash my car or wash my takkies, something like that,” he said.

“And if they (Pirates) win, I do the same or even go the extra mile of driving him around.”

Masango recently won the Premiership Player of the Month for September following a string of stunning performances, which also earned him a call-up to Shakes Mashaba's Bafana Bafana squad.

The 25-year-old netted five goals in eight appearances during August and September, including a brace against Mpumalanga Black Aces in the opening round of the top eight competition.
