Pearl Modiadie calls off wedding again

Sultry telly and radio presenter Pearl Modiadie has sent shock waves through the showbiz industry when she called off her traditional wedding to her fiance Nkululeko Buthelezi for the second time in less than two years.

Modiadie was supposed to have got married to Buthelezi, a businessman, in Tembisa, east of Joburg, yesterday.

Invitations had already been sent out, but the sassy entertainment star, who presents SABC1 show Zaziwa, cancelled the wedding after she allegedly clashed with Buthelezi over various issues in the build-up to their big day, sources say.

Modiadie declined to comment on the matter. She first broke off their engagement to the businessman early last year and spoke publicly about the difficulty of making that decision, but the couple later reconciled.

"It is not something that I'm ready to talk about now guys, please understand and respect that," she said this week.

But a relative, who didn't want to be named for fear of victimisation, said Modiadie put the wedding on hold after a series of "silly clashes" with Buthelezi.

"I will not tell you what those silly clashes are because she would know I'm the source of your story," said a relative.

"Although they had those kind of clashes in the past, she hoped they would not reoccur.

"She noted that if she continued with this wedding, she would have to divorce him after a few weeks, and this was going to dent her brand. She felt it would rather be better if she calls it off."

The relative also said Modiadie complained she was not free in their relationship because of issues with Buthelezi's personality. "She always walked on eggs shells around him and this resulted in her bottling up the issues."

The relative also said Modiadie was contemplating calling it quits for good this time as they have different priorities. What confounded Modiadie, according to another source, was the interference of Buthelezi's family in the planning of their wedding.

"Look, these people had little time to plan for this wedding. They started planning last month and his relatives wanted things to be done their way, whereas her family also wanted things done their way.

"It was a clash of cultural beliefs on how this wedding should be conducted and that too made things worse," said the source.

Although the two were still living together it is said their dalliance is on the cusp of collapsing as they hardly talk to each other.

A guest who was invited to the wedding and who confirmed that it was cancelled, said Modiadie was forced to either continue with the wedding, or to end it to avoid marrying today and filing for divorce a few days later.

The guest said although she was looking forward to the wedding, she did not agree with Modiadie's decision to get married to Buthelezi.

"As her friends, we had to respect her decision. But I'm relieved now that she was able to see him for what he is before the wedding day. For now we have to support her and help her get through this."

The source received the invite to the wedding early this year.

The Save The Date invitation card (pictured), was sent to more than a hundred guests in the showbiz industry. But she received a call from Modiadie four days before the wedding informing her that it was off.

"I could tell that she had tried everything to make it work. One could tell from her voice that she was defeated," added the friend.

Buthelezi said: "Yes, the traditional wedding has been postponed to a future date as per both families' agreement.

"We are together at a family funeral as we speak."
