Drama unfolded in the chambers of the Midrand Magistrate's Court on Friday when the lawyer of R&B singer Cici demanded that her former boyfriend Arthur Mafokate be further charged with negligence and reckless driving.

Mafokate appeared briefly in court for charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm laid by the award-winning songstress after she alleged that he dragged her with his car and she broke her pelvic bones when she fell to the ground.

It is alleged that the NPA begrudgingly acceded to the lawyer's request and asked the investigating officer to conduct further investigations to establish the possibility of adding the charge.

Gauteng NPA spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwana said: "The accused has not yet pleaded to the charge before him so nothing stops the NPA from adding further charges to the charge sheet.

"The investigating officer has been asked to conduct further investigations and once the investigations have been concluded and we are satisfied with new information received, then we could possibly add further charges."

Mafokate, the owner of 999 Music, declined to comment and referred us to the stable manager Brian Mokoena.

"The matter is sub judice and therefore we cannot comment. Let's wait for the court verdict and we will comment after that lest I behave like other people who are behaving like a kangaroo court," said Mokoena.

A law enforcement agent close to the case said the NPA would agree to add the negligence and reckless charge because the assault case against Mafokate might not stick.

Cici, real name Busisiwe Twala, declined to comment.

"In the statement this woman has deposed, she doesn't say Mafokate assaulted her. It is going to be tricky to prove assault here," said the agent.

The case was postponed to September 20 for mediation.

Meanwhile, Cici will appear in the same court on Tuesday for assault after Mafokate alleged that she moered him with a chair during their altercation.
