Foreign nationals urged to return to places they fled

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi Malobane on Monday urged foreign nationals who had fled their locations to return as it was safe.

Nkosi Malobane insisted that her department was holding “engagements” with hostel and community leaders to persuade communities to stop attacking foreigners.

She said most of the foreigners who took cover in refugee camps did so out of fear‚ not because they were attacked.

“The majority in the disaster camps have not been attacked‚ it is fear. If they go back they will be safe‚ if they go back home they will not be attacked‚” she said.

She said hostel and community leaders have prepared the ground for the foreigners’ safe return to communities.

Nkosi Malobane said all government departments would develop programmes that will improve the lives of locals as some of these attacks were influenced by poverty‚ joblessness and inequalities.

She said the three suspects arrested in connection with the stabbing death of Mozambican national Emmanuel Sithole were arrested in Alexandra.

She said police acted on the information from community members and arrested the suspects.

“The community of Gauteng has demonstrated patronage by assisting police to arrest the perpetrators of these horrendous acts‚” she said.
