Shocking working conditions on Generations set

Besides being paid small change, Generations actors are also crying foul about terrible working conditions.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, 16 fired actors spoke out about their core disputes with SABC and the production company MMSV.

Sick on set

Menzi Ngubane, who plays Sibusiso Dlomo, shared his side of the story to a tearful audience - that he is the actor that Mfundi Vundla mentioned as having paid for his medical bills.

Vundla said last week that he had paid out of his pocket for the actor to go to a private hospital.

Menzi disputes that he was taken to a private hospital.

“When I was diagnosed with kidney failure I was taken to Helen Joseph and Mfundi did not say I must be taken to a private clinic,” he said.

“After seven weeks of being in hospital I got a call sheet saying I must come to work the Monday after being released on Friday,” he said.

He added that he was expected at work everyday while he underwent dialysis four times a day.

Death on set

Sunday World reported earlier this year that toddler, Oratile Tshedza Mahene, who played Khethiwe's son, Mpilo died two days after shooting.

The mystery surrounding his death also emanates from the factor that he was still shooting a few scenes at the Generations studios in Auckland Park before he died.

Added to that, actors were not allowed to attend his funeral, as they were expected to be on set.

Actress Winnie Ntshaba (Khethiwe Buthelezi) said at the time she had wanted to pay her respect.

The situation is even more suspicious surrounding the fact that the popular program didn't release a statement, but kept unnervingly mum about the tragic death.

Racism on set

Another actress, Zikhona Sodlaka, also talked about the mistreatment of actors.

"White actors get treated better than black actors," Sikhona said.

“White actors have their own individual room while black actors have to share dressing rooms," she added.

"There is a lot of respect given to white people in comparison to black "We have separate rooms for black day actors and white day actors,” she said.

Katlego Danke was also fired while on her maternity leave.

“We are fighting for our rights. This industry is tough, it's not glamorous and not everything is ok,” said Menzi.

Fired for being sick

Luthuli Dlamini was fired last year when he failed to show up at work for being sick.

A Generation’s insider was quoted as saying:  “He wasn’t well and couldn’t come in…And that is what got him fired. It was as simple as that. And when he did appear he had a big shock to discover that he had been written out of the storyline.”
