FORMER president Thabo Mbeki's mother, Epainette (98), died at a hospital in the Eastern Cape yesterday.

FORMER president Thabo Mbeki's mother, Epainette (98), died at a hospital in the Eastern Cape yesterday.

She was admitted about two weeks ago with respiratory problems. The cause of death has not been announced.

MaMbeki was a member of the SACP and the ANC.

 She was married to ANC and SACP leader Govan Mbeki, who was jailed on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela.

President Jacob Zuma, before he was admitted to hospital for tests yesterday, sent his condolences to the Mbeki family via his spokesman, Mac Maharaj: "Words are not adequate to explain the sad loss of this mother of our nation."

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
