SAfm host to rub shoulders with Obama

KHANYI Magubane will add to her achievements.

The SAfm presenter has been chosen to attended the Young African Leadership Initiative Fellowship Programme in the US.

Magubane (34) , who hosts the Living Sounds and Art Matters weekly shows, is set to leave for Washington, DC next month to interact with other young Africans.

"It's exciting to be chosen. It's going to open up a network that can take me further," she said .

She is among 500 young leaders chosen from more than 50000 applicants.

The six-week programmeincludes activities on an academic level, lectures and seminars at a local university, community work and mentorship.

The group will also have a three-day mentorship programme with US President Barack Obama and other leaders from the White House.

Obama launched the programme in 2010 as a way to exchange leadership, entrepreneurial and management skills between Africans and Americans.

Magubane said she hoped to use what she would learn, and the connections she would make, to further her role in the media space.

"I want to use media as a social tool for change.

"I want to get young people to start seeing themselves in a positive light," she said.

Magubane holds an honours degree in journalism from the University of Johannesburg. She started her radio career in 2000 on Talk Radio 702.

In 2012, she produced the documentary Why Are We So Angry? for SABC1.

Magubane, who is also a poet and MC, was onMail & Guardian list of 200 top young South Africans last year.
