Detail's key to getting it right

MEN may not get what is often referred to as a woman's obsession, but fashion evolves and even they have been seduced by footwear.

There are a myriad shoes and styles to choose from, so how does a man know what shoe to wear with what kind of outfit on which occasion?

Shoes are a great way to add a new dimension to any outfit, says Tshepo Modiba, brand manager and men's footwear buyer for Spitz. " Take an ordinary dress shoe, add the smallest detail - be it in the fabric, the sharp tailoring technique or the choice of colour - and you instantly have a new and refined look ."

The key to getting it right is in the detail.

"Colour and pattern is a good way to start. Browns, black and navy are always a good base, but how about adding some air force blue, red, khaki or military green to your wardrobe?

"Contrast is understated, yet key to the overall look."

Teboho Pheko, Edcon's men's footwear specialist buyer, says loafers have become popular. "They're versatile - you can wear them in the office with socks for a smart look or at the weekend without socks for a relaxed look."

Hadebe (left) believes you can't go wrong with classic black leather lace-up shoes.

Robynn Farrell, the stylist on SABC3 breakfast show Expresso, says this season is all about brogues. "The right pair can be worn day and night. During the day you can pair them with jeans and no socks, and at night with a classic suit," she says.
