One of the primary objectives for SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt is to make the club challenge for league titles again in the future.

Hunt won three consecutive league titles from 2007 to 2010 with Matsatsantsa and he plans to relive those glory days in a club where there is less pressure than he was under at Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United.

“It is not about me, it is about the players buying into what I want,” Hunt told the media after their 3-1 victory over Royal AM at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday.

“If you don’t have the right mentality even if you have the best players, if they don’t want to play and don’t see the game like you see it, it will be a problem.

“You need the players to buy in. We are a long way short of a challenge but I think we are a team that can be competitive and we need to be consistent.

“I want SuperSport to get back to a team challenging for the league titles."

Hunt was also pleased with his side's fighting spirit they showed against Royal.

“There is a mixture of young and old and we need to get the balance right and that takes time. I thought tonight [Tuesday] was a performance more like I’m used to from a club like SuperSport.

“So it is important we build on that.”

Elsewhere, Marumo Gallants coach Dan Malesela was pleased with the discipline and the commitment his side showed as they registered their first victory of the season against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium also on Tuesday winning 1-0.

“Very tough against a team that gave us a run for our money and a very difficult team to play against,” Malesela said.

“I’m not sure how many teams are going to come here and survive. At some stage, they forced us to defend very deep in our half.

“But sometimes also if you have not won for quite some time, this would happen because the players would panic. But I’m happy with the discipline of the players and the work rate they put in.

“We can only move forward from here.”
