Malawi international Muhammad Sulumba close to a contract at Polokwane City

Polokwane City have not managed to capture the signature of Belgian forward Christophe Martin-Suarez but are still assessing Malawi international Muhammad Sulumba ahead of the new season.

Coach Luc Eymael was keen to bring in countryman Martin-Suarez after he impressed on trial‚ but when City were slow to make their move‚ the player returned to Belgium where he had two other offers on the table.

The signs appear more promising for Sulumba though and Times Media Digital understands he will be offered a contract‚ though nothing has been signed yet.

The 29-year-old had joined Jomo Cosmos last season but was not registered for the Premier Soccer League due to paperwork issues.

He fits the mould of a tall and powerful striker that Eymael is looking for to supplement the likes of Thobani Mncwango‚ Puleng Tlolane and Rodney Ramagalela.

Sulumba is a current Malawi international who played for his country in the June African Nations Cup qualifiers when they lost 3-0 to Zimbabwe.

City have been slow to add numbers to their squad this season with just a handful of confirmed deals so far.

One of those was to bring Ramagalela from Mamelodi Sundowns‚ while they have also signed former Chippa United fullback Walter Maponyane.

Centre-back Thabiso Semenya has arrived from Platinum Stars‚ while midfielder Thabang Klaas joins from Witbank Spurs.

Conversely there have not been many exits from the squad either with the most high-profile player to leave the club being Cole Alexander‚ who has jumped ship to SuperSport United.

The club also lost former Kaizer Chiefs fullback Tlou Molekwane to Bloemfontein Celtic‚ while Linda Shiba has joined Chippa.
