TLB Boxing Promotions of ex-world champions Dingaan Thobela, Lehlohonolo Ledwaba and Jan Bergman will shake the boxing landscape both in South Africa and internationally, warns spokeswoman Joyce Kungwane.
The new boxing venture was launched in Menlyn, Pretoria, yesterday. "The consortium comprises people who are well versed in boxing. Their expertise will make life easy for all us to put together exciting bouts," said Kungwane.
"We also have a medical doctor; I am a PR person with sports psychology, which will assist our boxers in need of those services. We are also lucky to have partners like Sun International and Workers Life Insurance," she said.
TLB's first tournament will take place at the Carousel Resort in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria on December 8.
The venue has good and bad memories to the three promoters. Thobela lost his WBA lightweight belt there to Russian Orzubek Nazarov in 1994, while Ledwaba captured the IBF junior featherweight belt there in 1996 against American John Michael Johnson.
Bergman won the WBC International junior welterweight belt there in 1993.
Thobela, 51, did not attend the launch yesterday because he was not feeling well.
"We've waited for almost a year for this to happen. I am excited to open a new page in my career," said the 47-year-old Ledwaba from White City, in Soweto.
Bergman, 46, from Toekomsrus, said: "Wait, you are going to be surprised. There is excitement coming your way."
