Gonya to dethrone Tete in Ireland, boasts manager

Boxing promoter Thulani Magudulela is confident of an upset when Siboniso Gonya fights Zolani Tete.
Boxing promoter Thulani Magudulela is confident of an upset when Siboniso Gonya fights Zolani Tete.

Siboniso Gonya and his team will jet off to Ireland on Friday to wrest the WBO bantamweight from Zolani Tete, warned Gonya's boastful promoter and manager Thulani Magudulela.

The clash of left-handers at the SSE Arena in Belfast next Saturday will be promoted by Tete's English promoter Frank Warren.

"Gonya is not given any chance. That happened when we travelled to Namibia to challenge WBO intercontinental champion [Immanuel Naidjala] in April but we came back with the same title that qualified Gonya to challenge Zolani," said Magudulela yesterday. "It is just a pity that we have to go all the way to Belfast.

"We all know what Zolani is capable of but a few know who Gonya is and that is the why they see him as a soft target.

"We respect Zolani a lot but a new champion will be crowned on November 18 and the beauty is that the title is coming back to South Africa."

Gonya has five short-route wins in 11 victories, against one loss, while Tete boasts 20 knockouts in 25 wins, against three losses.

Tete won the WBO belt in April in his fourth fight in the UK since teaming up with Warren in 2015.

Gonya will travel with Magudulela, trainer Zwi Magudulela and IBF All Africa featherweight champion Innocent "Tycoon" Mantengu, who will be his sparring partner.
