It will be a case of do or die for Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu when the SA and African Boxing Union cruiserweight champion challenges WBC International title holder Constantin Bejenaru from Moldova at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, US, on November 25.
Victory for Mchunu will improve his ranking, currently 14th, and ultimately bring him closer to contention for the WBC belt which is currently held by Mairis Bridies from Latvia. But defeat against Bejenaru, ranked 15th, will shatter hopes of making it big in the WBC, and the South African knows that too.
"I know that win will shoot me right back to the top 10, and I will surely be one fight away from challenging for the WBC," he said yesterday.
"This is a very important fight for me and I approach it as such. Bejenaru is a come-forward fighter; slightly taller but he is not clever.
"I do not see him being a problem. He does not give me sleepless nights."
The upcoming fight will be Mchunu's second at the venue where he launched his international trek in 2013 when he outpointed Eddie Chambers over 10 rounds.
On paper, the 29-year-old Mchunu - who outclassed Johnny Muller over 12 rounds for both the SA and ABU belts at Emperors Palace on June 10 - is a favourite to win.
Mchunu has 11 knockouts in 18 wins against three losses.
