Female fighters honour political heavyweights

Sibongile Matiti has taken no prisoners in her approach to making sure that women are celebrated for their contribution in bringing about change to the political landscape of South Africa.

The East London-based promoter, of ZBashy Promotions and Events, will feature three female SA championships in her Women in Boxing tournament at Mdantsane indoor centre on Friday evening.

Topping Matiti's bill will be flyweight champion Nozwelethu Mathonsi against Nthabiseng Didi over 10 rounds, while featherweight holder Asandiswa Nxokwana will defend against Sandisiwe Gxogxo in the main supporting bout. Noxolo Makhanavu will put her flyweight belt on the line against Portia Base.

Bukiwe Nonina will welcome Zimbabwean Patience Musitara in a non-title six- rounder, while Xolelwa Soka and Esther Mashiya will meet in a middleweight bout over six rounds.

Matiti said the month was a reminder of the good deeds done by the likes of anti-apartheid activist Lillian Ngoyi.

"So we felt it is proper for us to celebrate their legacy through boxing."

Action will begin at 7pm.

Meanwhile, the Limpopo government has announced its partnership with the Limpopo Promoters Association in a move that seek to assist local promoters to rebuilding the sport, which is dying in the province.

A women-only tournament has been planned for Ngoako Ramatlhodi sports centre in Seshego on August 26.
