If the fight record and longevity is anything to go by, then Colombian ring veteran Luis Meléndez will be too much for Ludumo Lamati, when they meet for the vacant International Boxing Federation Continental junior featherweight belt at East London's International Convention Centre Hall on July 30.

The 38-year-old left-handed Meléndez has fought 317 rounds in the professional ranks, where he has won 47 of his 58 fights.

The boxer, who has won only marginal titles, including the World Boxing Organisation North American Boxing Organisation junior featherweight belt, has 34 knockouts against 10 losses and a draw.

He will face a rising star in Lamati who has shown great potential since he turned professional in 2014.

The 25-year-old right-hander from Mdantsane, who is trained in Johannesburg by Rocky Weinstein, is undefeated after 12 fights.

Nicknamed "9mm" after a semi-automatic pistol, Lamati has blasted eight of his 11 victims. He has a single draw.

Lamati and Meléndez will meet in one of the four championship tournaments to be staged by Ayanda Matiti's Xaba Promotions and Events.

Lamati's trainer Rocky Weinstein said his charge will be ready for anything that Meléndez will throw at him.

"Ludumo is sparring with many guys with different styles, including left-handed former world champion Zolani Marali, Junior Soya and Fortune Muyumba so that he goes into the fight ready to handle anything that is thrown at him by Meléndez," said Weinstein.

"He [Meléndez] is tough and this will be a hard fight for Ludumo. But one thing Ludumo has got youth on his side," he added.
