Women's boxing takes limelight

The spotlight will fall on women's boxing again this weekend, courtesy of Boxing South Africa (BSA), which has planned four tournaments this quarter.

Sibongile Matiti, who trades under the banner of Zbashy Boxing Promotions, will stage her "women only" tournament at Mdantsane Indoor Centre on Friday evening.

BSA chairwoman Muditambi Ravele said: "In December we invited female promoters to bid for the hosting of tournaments which would include at least one national, one provincial title and development fights.

"This is a deliberate move to address the specific area we are not doing well in, namely female participation at development level.

"Following a transparent and competitive process, four female promoters were appointed to host different tournaments. The golden rule was clear, these tournaments must be of women by women for women."

The first tournament was staged by Aphile Boxing Promotions at Nangoza Jebe Hall in Port Elizabeth a fortnight ago.

The third will be staged by Mbali Zantsi in Kempton Park on Saturday, while Zandile Malinga will stage hers in Durban. The date and venue of Malinga's event is yet to be confirmed.

These tournaments will be bankrolled by BSA.

Topping Matiti's bill on Friday will be SA featherweight champion Asandiswa Nxokwana against Unathi "African Queen" Myekeni over 10 rounds.

Nxokwana will make her first defence of the local strap she won in 2013 against Raider Muleba.

Myekeni returns to the ring after failing to win the World Boxing Federation Women's World Super Featherweight title against Hyun-Mi Choi in South Korea in May 2016.

Matiti said current SA flyweight champion Nozwelethu Mathonsi will face Siphosethu Nxazonke over eight rounds, while Xoliswa Jonas and Nomampondomise Xhotyeni will meet over six rounds in the welterweight class.

"The idea is to elevate female boxers. We want them to be known and in the process connect with people the same way their male counterparts do," said Matiti.

l WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman won the WBC belt from Danny Garcia in the US on Sunday morning, while Tony Bellew knocked David Haye through the ropes in the 11th round in London on Saturday night.
