BSA steps up from indabas to symposiums

It has been the norm since Boxing South Africa (BSA) was established in 2002 for the national sports governing body to hold an indaba a few days before or after its annual awards.

However, the current board, chaired by Muditambi Ravele, is looking at having separate symposiums with its licensees instead.

This because some of the licensees still need to form associations, as per the BSA Act of 2001.

BSA held its awards ceremony in Durban two weeks ago.

"One of the things we learnt from indaba is that we did not give in-depth discussions and training of different sectors and, as a result, we decided to stagger the workshops, which would include training of all our different categories of licensees," said Ravele.

She was referring to the national sports indaba that was called by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula in 2013, where the return of television coverage of fights and the awards were among the resolutions that have since been implemented.

Ravele added: "One of our observations as the board is that our licensees still have challenges on the interpretation of rules, the act and regulations.

"Our promoters also need to look at issues around events management, safety at events and also how to budget for an event."

Regarding the formation of associations, Ravele said: "We have already formed the Ring Officials Association and we now want to move to other sectors.

"Out of those associations' input, we as the board would then be able to plan a national convention because those associations would have met and tabled all their concerns."
