Will the most sought-after Boxing SA's boxer of the year award go to Duncan Village, Mdantsane or Mthatha?

This question will be answered tonight at Durban's ICC Hall where Simpiwe "Chain Reaction" Konkco from Mthatha will be up against Xolisani "Nomeva" Ndongeni and Zolani "Last Born" Tete who are from Duncan Village and Mdantsane, respectively.

These two neighbouring townships near East London have their own sporting rivalry as either township believes it is superior than the other in terms of producing great boxing champions.

Konkco holds the IBO mini flyweight belt, while Ndongeni and Tete vacated their IBO lightweight and IBF junior bantamweight belts to pursue other avenues.

The winner tonight will walk away with a statute and R15000 in prize money.

Konkco and Ndongeni are trained in Johannesburg by Colin Nathan, while Loyiso Mtya hones the skills of Tete in Mdantsane.

Interestingly, Nathan is contesting the trainer of the year award with Ndongeni's former trainer Mzamo Njekanye of Duncan Village and Newclare, Johannesburg-based, Keith Rass.

Njekanye started training Ndongeni before the boxer left him to join Nathan in Johannesburg two years ago.

Njekanye then guided Azinga Fuzile to victory for the SA featherweight belt in only his fifth fight.

Rass guided Gideon Buthelezi to winning the IBO junior bantamweight, while Bongani Mahlangu won the SA junior featherweight belt before both boxers bolted his stable.

The spotlight will also be on the male prospect's award which will be contested by Brandon Thysse, Fuzile and Thulani Mbenge.

In the other categories, Bukiwe Nonina, Leighandre Jegels and Sharrodene Fortuin will vie for the female boxer of the year award.

"We will produce stars that will represent boxing at the SA Sports Awards in November. We will have a red carpet, fashion show and exhibition boxing bouts featuring top male actors and female radio talk show hosts," said BSA boss Tsholofelo Lejaka.

While the winners across seven categories that involve boxers will get the "Oscars" and R15000, all the nominees will receive BSA's green blazers.
