Boxing SA's (BSA) annual awards, which have not taken place for seven years, are back.

The event will recognise and celebrate excellence across 18 categories.

The federation's chief executive Tsholofelo Lejaka confirmed this but was coy when asked about the date and venue.

He said everything regarding the awards was explained in a rule book. "It further outlines nomination processes to be followed.

"The rule book as well as nomination forms can easily be accessed on our webpage [www.boxingsa.co.za] or through our provincial managers."

Lejaka said candidates could not nominate themselves.

The categories are: female and male boxers of the year; female and male fight of the year; female and male prospect of the year; matchmaker of the year; journalist of the year; female ring official of the year; male ring official of the year; most promising official of the year; knock-out of the year; trainer of the year; promoter of the year; manager of the year; most promising development promoter of the year; association of the year; and chairperson's awards.

"The categories under chairperson's awards are the lifetime achievement and special achievement awards," he said.

The nomination for boxing awards remains open from Saturday (October 1) till November 2.

Lejaka praised BSA chairwoman Muditambi Ravele who in May promised she would bring the awards back.

"She went on to direct that this will be among the first things I, the new CEO, would process once I assumed office in June," he said.

"The significance of these awards can never be overstated. In a society where negative role models often attempt to reign supreme, boxing's galaxy of excellence can simply not afford to play second fiddle.

"Through these awards we seek to recognise, reward and profile their accomplishment. Through their journey, we seek to inspire the next generation."

He said an adjudication panel of knowledgeable, experienced, and committed men and women of good standing has been appointed. "This includes considering all nominations, short-listing nominees per category and finally coming up with winners in each category."

Lejaka said a firm of independent auditors has also been appointed to oversee compliance to the rule book and ensure integrity of the entire process.
