Seasoned boxing trainer Welcome Ncita said he was impressed by the manner in which his new charge Sharrodene "Shinzo" Fortuin handled the business against dangerous and vastly experienced opponent Simone Da Silva on Saturday.

Fortuin - the IBO bantamweight champion - had to bring all her best to outscore the Brazilian after 10 clean fought rounds at Mdantsane Indoor Centre in East London.

Da Silva came out guns blazing in an attempt to knock her foe down to at least level the scores, but Fortuin smartly danced herself to safety - thanks to Ncita's teachings.

Promoter Tando Zonke's belated Women's Month celebrations tournament attracted an impressive crowd, considering the cold and wet conditions in East London.

The event was also attended by Boxing SA's big shots, chief executive Tsholofelo Lejaka and chairperson Muditambi Ravele, as well as the province's MEC for sports Pemmy Majodina.

"I had only four weeks with Sharrodene to prepare for this fight but I can tell you that there are improvements," said Ncita.

"The truth is that she is still very raw after only eight fights but she handled herself well against Da Silva who has well over 20 fights. Sharrodene has just the right mentality and skills. Give us time we will hit the stars."

Zonke had intended to feature Fortuin in a WBA International bout but the unavailability of credible opponents did not only force him to relegate the bout to a nontitle contest but he also had to postpone his tournament from August 26 to Saturday evening to give Da Silva - a late replacement - time to prepare for the bout.

In the main supporting bout of the tournament dubbed "Rise Woman Rise", Nozipho Bell retained her South African junior lightweight belt on points against Nomampondomise Xhotyeni.

In the male section, Phila Gola produced a riveting performance over six rounds against Zama Zonke while Asiphe Ntshili outpointed Siviwe Hasheni over six rounds.

Phila Mpontshane dropped Skholele Thuso three times in the second round, forcing a stoppage, while Lunga Fuzani made a positive professional debut as he defeated Yamkelo Phaliso over four rounds.
