Nonina dreaming of world title

National bantamweight champion Bukiwe Nonina, left, and her trainer Emmanuel Neluoende show off her belt.

Dutywa, the childhood home of former president Thabo Mbeki, will produce its first female world boxing champion if Bukiwe "Anaconda" Nonina succeeds in her bid to dethrone Renata "Hardcore" Domsodi as the WBF bantamweight champion tonight.

The 24-year-old boxer, who is trained in Giyani by unheralded Emmanuel Neluoende, has age on her side while the champion from Budapest is racing against time at 41.

Their bout will headline a bill organised by Mulenzhe World Sports Promotion at the Thohoyandou Town Hall in Limpopo.

Nonina made history as the first female boxer from that part of the Transkei in Eastern Cape when she won the national bantamweight belt in 2012.

Nonina and former amateur boxer Neluoende have chalked up nine wins against three losses and a draw.

Domsodi won the WBF title in July, and has 15 wins from 25 bouts.

Said Nonina: "Renata should sit back and pay attention to her family because time is no longer on her side. It is time for the youth now. I won't give her the chance to go the full 10 rounds distance. I am fit, I have been in the gym since my last fight in March. I want to grab this opportunity in style. Remember this is Women's Month, so I want to make women and the entire country proud."

Nonina failed to win the WBC Silver belt against Catherine Phiri in Lusaka in 2014. Coincidentally, Phiri will defend her actual WBC belt against Gabisile "Simply the Best" Tshabalala in Lusaka tomorrow night.

Neluoende said: "The beauty is that this fight is taking place at home. It was great to fight for the WBC Silver belt but we are now fighting for the actual world title and victory will open doors for Bukiwe. Her dream to fight for a world title has come through, she must just grab it. Our plan is to put pressure on Renata from the first round."

In the other fights:

lMatshiditso Mokebisi will put her WBF International bantamweight title on the line against Melissa Miller;

lNdobayini Kholosa will defend her SA lightweight belt against Raider Muleba;

lMapule Ngubane and Esther Mashiya will do battle for the vacant WBF International middleweight title and;

l Pfariseni Khorommbi and Phumudzo Monyai will complete the bill with their four rounder in the male section.

Meanwhile the unavailability of credible opponents to face IBO bantamweight female champion Sharrodene "Shinzo" Fortuin for the WBA International title at Mdantsane Indoor Centre tonight has forced promoter Tando Zonke to postpone the tournament to September 4. "We wish to apologise to stakeholders for the inconvenience," said Zonke.
