Position overview

Arena Holdings is looking for an experienced sports journalist to fill the position of Sunday Times/digital sports reporter, with a primary emphasis on cricket coverage, but athletics, rugby, soccer or other expertise can be factored in. 

Core functions

  • Work as a journalist to report sport news; with a primary emphasis on cricket coverage, but athletics, rugby, soccer or other expertise can be factored in
  • Manage a daily and a long-term sport diary with at least three stories per day on average and a minimum of two exclusives per month
  • Travel and attend media events at times
  • Go to stadiums to cover day and night matches
  • There may at times be a requirement to be involved in content production, producing and publishing digital sports content (text, video, images, audio) on digital platforms including TimesLIVE and SowetanLIVE, following best practice and using all content management system tools optimally; and
  • Contribute content to Digital on a daily basis, Sunday Times weekly and other Arena Holdings titles as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree/diploma in journalism or a related field.
  • At least five years’ newsroom experience, preferably in a web production and/or reporting role.

Skills

  • A solid understanding of the SA sporting landscape and an eye for news, preferably with an emphasis on cricket.
  • A strong contact list.
  • Willing to work well with a team.
  • Willing to work long hours at times, including weekends and after hours.
  • Experience in covering sport at large, live sports events, and press conferences.
  • An ability to produce well-written, interesting, well-researched sports copy quickly and cleanly.
  • Capable of producing original stories, interviews, and breaking news stories in a fast-paced digital environment.
