Netball SA (NSA) president Cecilia Molokwane has reflected with pride on the Spar Netball Championships that ended in Port Elizabeth at the weekend.

While the competition experienced a few teething problems in the beginning, Molokwane believes NSA's mission of taking netball to the people was still achieved.

"We have learnt and seen our mistakes, [so we'll] come back better next year," she told Sowetan at Saturday's final where Tshwane defeated Mangaung Metro 47-34.

"We never expected so many districts to participate - 83 is a big number for a tournament that was trying out a new format."

Molokwane added that the event also paved the way for NSA's mission to meet transformation targets.

"We have been eight months in office and, at the end of the day, we'll reach the transformation targets and reflect the demographics of the country in our senior national team."

"If you look at some of the changes so far - the squads that were announced [on Saturday] have a lot of upcoming young black players," said Molokwane, in reference to NSA's announcement of a 26-member Spar Protea training squad, a President's XII, a Fast Five squad, as well as a development and Under-21 squad.
