Rising SA tennis star Kholo Montsi gained his first ATP World Tour ranking point yesterday after beating Canadian, Riaan du Toit 6-3 6-7 6-1 during the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Digicall Futures 1 tournament being played at Stellenbosch University.
Montsi, who has only just turned 15, is one of the country's most talented juniors - he was recently named in the 2018 Tennis SA junior national squad programme and won the boys under-16 category at the 2017 Growthpoint Junior Masters.
"It feels good to have won against an older player (Du Toit). That made me aware that I am now able to compete against players that are older than me, which then resulted in my first ATP ranking point," said Montsi.
"I never thought I would get my first ATP point at my very first ITF Futures [event] in South Africa - at only 15 years of age.
"And having my family with me to experience this moment was just a cherry on top."
Montsi looks up to his brother and fellow elite tennis junior Sipho, 18, who was part of the Davis Cup squad earlier this year and represented South Africa at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games.
