An athletes’ representative association on Tuesday said it had resorted to the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PIAI) to demand specific information from Athletics SA (ASA)‚ adding that previous attempts to get the data had failed.

They want to know‚ among other things‚ the reasoning behind “the contentious qualification [criteria]” used for the world championships in London‚ where 14 local athletes who had met the international entry criteria were omitted from the team because they had not achieved ASA’s stiffer qualifying standards.

Yet ASA still picked a handful of athletes who qualified on even lesser standards.

The Forum for Athletes South Africa (Fasa) also want to know the number of officials who travelled to the world championships‚ the functions they performed‚ the number of people who accompanied them and the costs of their trips.

Fasa secretary Orazio Cremona‚ the SA shot put champion‚ said past attempts to get this information had failed.

“Previous requests that Fasa directed to ASA and the minister of Sport and Recreation have fallen on deaf ears.

“Fasa is still prepared‚ however‚ to meet with these role-players.

“Further steps will be taken if no feedback is received in terms of the PIAI application‚” warned Cremona‚ who was part of the squad that competed in London.

“Fasa is also of the opinion that ASA does not do enough to promote athletics and says that feedback on their requests will place athletes in a more informed position‚” added Cremona.

The PIAI requests were made to ASA president Aleck Skhosana and CEO Richard Stander.

Skhosana confirmed he had received the request.

“The CEO and our legal team will look at it and advise us accordingly‚” he said.
