Wits‚ Stars and SuperSport to go into the Caf hat on Tuesday

Bidvest Wits‚ Platinum Stars and SuperSport United will all go into the African Confederation Cup draw on Tuesday but Mamelodi Sundowns must wait a little longer before finding out the identity of their next African Champions League opponents.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will hold the draw for the third round of the Confederation Cup at their Cairo headquarters on Tuesday with 16 teams advancing from the second round‚ including Stars and SuperSport‚ and 16 dropping down after being eliminated from the Champions League at the weekend‚ including Gavin Hunt’s team.

Wits move down after Champions League elimination at the hands of Egyptian giants Al Ahly. They went out 1-0 over the two legs.

Stars needed a stoppage time penalty to avoid losing to Vipers of Uganda but SuperSport were emphatic on Sunday in beating Al Ahly Shendy of Sudan 6-3 on aggregate.

Stars and SuperSport will both travel away for their next match and again have home advantage in the return leg.

One of them could even be drawn against Wits.

The Champions League dropouts will play at home in the first leg on the weekend of April 7-9 with the return game one week later.

The 16 winners then go into an expanded group phase competition in Africa’s secondary club competition.

A CAF spokesman said on Monday no date had yet been set for the draw of their group phase of the Champions League where Sundowns are defending their title‚ having squeezed through against Kampala Capital City Authority at the weekend.

CAF will presumably hold the draw for the group phase of both the Champions League and the Confederation Cup at the same time and therefore it is likely to come in the week starting April 17.

The group phase of both competitions kicks off on the weekend of May 12-14. - TMG Digital
