The more you win‚ the harder it is to keep winning‚ Mamelodi Sundowns forward Anthony Laffor has admitted.
The mercurial Liberian also said his side have put themselves in that situation so have no use complaining about it.
Laffor‚ who has rediscovered his consistency as a match-winner in the past year‚ was a substitute for limping Sibusiso Vilakazi on Tuesday night against Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld‚ but could not help Sundowns to more than a 0-0 draw.
The forward said he believes Downs will emerge from a mini-slump that has seen Downs drop seven crucial points out of nine from their last three Absa Premiership games‚ opening up the title race.
“That is life. And that is where we find ourselves. We just need to accept it and take ourselves out of the situation‚” Laffor said‚ asked if winning gets harder over time.
“Because we put ourselves in that situation. Every team wants to beat us and if they draw they are happy. And there’s nothing we can do about it.
“We don’t need to blame ourselves‚ and we don’t need to blame our tactics. It’s just that we are missing chances.
“And we just need to get a win in the league and then things are going to be fine.
“At the moment‚ where we are on the log‚ it looks difficult but it’s not difficult. We’ve got games in hand‚ although those aren’t wins.
“We just need to keep our feet on the ground because where we are is OK‚ although we are not satisfied – we can do better.
“And I think we are going to do better. It is going to change. Because this is not the first time we have been in this situation at Sundowns.
“In the time I’ve been at Sundowns we’ve been in this situation. We took ourselves out of it. So‚ we’ll see.”
Sundowns were in similar sticky situations where competing continentally and in multiple domestic competitions saw pundits predict their demise in all of them.
Winning the 2015-16 PSL‚ Downs had to sacrifice the Nedbank Cup‚ but marched on into the Caf Champions League (ACL) group stages.
Once they reached the Champions League knockout stages‚ Downs beat Zesco United in the semifinals on either side of playing two-legged MTN8 semis against Chippa United.
They beat Zamalek in the ACL final‚ but had to sacrifice the MTN8 final 3-0 to Bidvest Wits.
Currently Sundowns are juggling the PSL race‚ ACL early rounds and the Nedbank Cup.
