Hunt: Our final ball wasn't good enough

BidVest Wits needs to put in a lot of work if they plan to unseat Mamelodi Sundowns as Absa Premiership's champions.

Confident after their 5-0 victory over Baroka last Wednesday, Wits were beaten 2-0 by a far more experienced side in Tshwane on Saturday.

In terms of quality, Wits players can match Sundowns , but the Brazilians have mastered the art of grinding out a result in tough matches, and Wits need to do that as well if they want to win their first league title.

"I am disappointed. We did not deserve to lose, but that is football. You have to commend Sundowns. We tried to win the game and I thought we were decent," said Wits coach Gavin Hunt after the match.

"We cannot talk about title aspirations now. There are 13 games to go and we have to play Champions League as well. We had a good run and now we have to start again. These things happen."

Wits put pressure on Sundowns in the second half after Hlompho Kekana gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break. While trying to push for the equaliser, Wits left spaces open at the back and Sundowns capitalised by scoring the second in stoppage time through Sibusiso Vilakazi.

"To be fair, the game could have been handled better, but that's how football works. There certainly should have been a sending off in the first half, we all know that," said Hunt in reference to a Thabo Langerman late challenge that produced only a yellow card.

"To be fair, until they scored the free kick, we had the best chances. Our final ball was not good enough because of the playing surface."
