Billiat shifts focus to title defence

There's often been talk about a possible move to Europe for Khama Billiat, but that's the last thing on his mind right now because he is having the time of his life at Mamelodi Sundowns.

A historic first CAF Champions League title is in the bag for Sundowns after their victory in the final over Egyptian giants Zamalek and now Billiat is already talking about how they want to defend their Absa Premiership title. The way Sundowns are going, they might need to get a bigger cabinet at Chloorkop to make space for the many trophies they are determined to win in future.

They've played just one game in the league and will still have a lot of catching up to do since they will play in the Fifa Club World Cup in December.

"We will do our best to defend it, although we are going to play more games than everyone. But we trust our coaches because they know how to make us rest and recover on time," said Billiat, who is on the list of nominees for the African Player of the Year.

"If it was not for that, I don't think we would have won the Champions League. We've played games in between that were crucial and we needed rest, so we will do our best to defend it. We believe in our team."

Billiat praised the work of the technical team, led by coach Pitso Mosimane, for their success domestically and on the continent.

"To have such people around is great. You go into the game knowing what is expected of you. They are like fathers to us because they know how to approach players. They are amazing," said the Zimbabwean international.

"It's not easy to put good players together, because there's arrogance in the team, but the coach knows how to put the players together."

Sundowns had a training session in Cairo yesterday before flying back to South Africa in the evening. They will land in the early hours today ahead of their Telkom Knockout last 16 match against Polokwane City at Lucas Moripe Stadium, tomorrow (6pm).
