Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt was pleased with the 3-0 result in his side’s first leg of their MTN8 semifinal against Cape Town City‚ but the not the performance at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night.

Wits have one foot in the final following a commanding first half where they profited from defensive lapses from new team City’s disjointed defence to score through Eleazar Rodgers (22nd minute)‚ Elias Pelembe (38th) and Gabadinho Mhango (44th).

The Clever Boys consolidated in the second half‚ though City also regrouped and Hunt’s side struggled to replicate their earlier dominance.

“You can’t be happy with the performance but we’re happy with the result. The performance wasn’t as good as it was in the previous two games‚” Hunt said.

“We looked like we were short of a gallop. We lost our rhythm. But the result was important‚ and now we’ve got a big game on Tuesday.”

Wits have three victories from three in 2015-16‚ having beaten both Soweto giants 2-1 in their opening two games at Bidvest Stadium – Kaizer Chiefs in the league and Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 quarterfinals.

Hunt’s side meet Polokwane City in the league at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night.

A blemish to Wits’ perfect start is the suspensions they are picking up. They had goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs sent off late on Saturday for a punch on Duncan Adonis‚ to follow Xola Mlambo’s dismissal against Pirates.

Hunt said it was Wits’ goal to try to kill the game off in the first leg of their semifinal against City.

“That is the plan in these two-legged games. But even a 0-0 would have been a good result for us‚ even at home. The main thing at home is to not concede.

“But by the time we get to Cape Town I don’t know how many players we’re going to have left [because of suspensions]. It’s crazy man.” — TMG Digital
