SuperSport United sign Aubrey Modiba from Cape Town City

SuperSport United have completed the signing of Cape Town City left-sided player Aubrey Modiba on a four-year contract just hours before the close of the transfer window.

Modiba leaves City having made known his desire to return to Gauteng following the sale of Mpumalanga Black Aces to Cape Town-based John Comitis.

Former Ajax Cape Town utility player Thato Mokeke will join City as part of the deal.

His capture is a coup for SuperSport as he can fill in a number of roles for Stuart Baxter’s side.

Although he has featured as a left-back for City and Black Aces last season, he was used on the left wing for the national side that competed at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Modiba played in both City’s matches this season, a 2-0 league victory over Polokwane City and the 1-0 MTN8 quarterfinal victory over Kaizer Chiefs, and impressed in both outings.

The left-back position looks nailed down at SuperSport with both Onismor Bhasera and Keegan Ritchie available to Baxter, suggesting that Modiba will be used in a more advanced role.

It has been a meteoric rise for the 21 in the last few seasons, having been spotted playing for the Nedbank Ke Yona side in 2014.

He was immediately elevated into the national Under-20 side and signed with Black Aces.

He made his top-flight debut in the 2014/15 season, but became a regular in the last campaign where he helped AmaZayoni to fourth in the league.
