There is no truth to rumours circulating on social media that the South African men’s Olympic team have been involved in a car accident, said the team’s media liaison Namhla Mphelo from Brazil.

Contacted on Whatsapp in Brasilia, Mphelo said the team had not left their hotel yet on Saturday, and she could not understand where the rumour had surfaced from.

“We don’t know where that is coming from,” Mphelo SMSed on Saturday evening.

She added: “We are fine haven’t left the hotel all day. We will only go to training later today.

“I can’t even tack where this lie comes from,” Mphelo said.

The SA Under23s began their Rio 2016 Olympic campaign with a stirring, 10-man victory against hosts Brazil in Brasilia on Thursday night.

They next meet Denmark, also in the Brazil capital, late on Sunday night (12pm SA time.)
