Platinum Stars will today add to the goalkeeping stocks with the signing of promising young Vasco da Gama gloveman Steven Hoffman.

Hoffman played nine matches for BidVest Wits in the 2012/13 season but has not kicked-on with his career in the top-flight.

Instead the 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons as the regular number one at National First Division side Vasco.

He will be given the opportunity to fight for a place as number one at Stars‚ where he will compete with Mbongeni Mzimela and Mwenya Chibwe‚ who is yet to make an appearance for the club.

Stars released experienced Senegal keeper Bouna Coundoul after just one season in the PSL and were also forced to fine Mzimela last season after the player allegedly pitched for training smelling of alcohol.

It was part of the incident that led to the sacking of Masibusane Zongo‚ while Mzimela and Khulekani Madondo received “a heavy fine and a final warning”‚ according to the club.

The Cape Town-born Hoffman made his Wits debut as an 18-year-old in 2012 having come in for the experienced Emile Baron‚ who was injured in the opening game of that season.

He was called-up to the South African Under-23 side earlier this year for the away friendly in Brazil‚ but has not been included in the final squad for the Olympics.

He has previously played for the national Under-17 and Under-20 teams‚ and after coming through the development ranks at Ajax Cape Town‚ was close to a return to Ikamva in 2014.

But instead he opted for game-time at Vasco‚ where he has won rave reviews in the last two campaigns.
