Stars brush aside Aloes in cup clash

KwaZulu-Natal's Kingdom Stars and the Southern Stings of Western Cape both made strong claims as title contenders for this season's Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League as round one matches resumed at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria on Saturday.

Stars beat Eastern Cape Aloes 46-26 while Stings opened their campaign with a 67-19 victory over the Northern Cape Diamonds.

The Golden Fireballs also claimed their first win when they beat Limpopo Baobabs 65-42.

On Friday night, the season began with title favourites, Gauteng Jaguars, beating defending champs Free State Crinums 55-39, and Mpumalanga Sunbirds edging the Baobabs 48-40.

Stars took to the court with a strong team loaded with four Spar Proteas players in captain Bongi Msomi, Precious Mthembu, former North West Flames player Elsunet du Plessis and former Stings star Phumza Maweni.

They dominated Aloes, racing into a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

For Msomi, it was the perfect start. "We've prepared very well for this season and it's good to see everything we have been working on being put into practice and to gauge what level we're at.

"At the moment, it's just about focusing on the next game."

In yesterday's programme, the Southern Stings stormed to a 44 - 33 victory over the Golden Fireballs.

Earlier, the North West Flames got their NPL campaign off to an ideal start, with a comprehensive 68-36 victory over the Eastern Aloes.

Although the Eastern Cape team were first on the scoreboard, the Flames dominated the match throughout.

They led 21-7 after the first quarter.
