CAF meeting to decide Tokyo's fate

Tokyo Sexwale's fate is now in the hands of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and he will know on Friday if the continental body will support his campaign for the Fifa presidency or bring it to a premature end.

The SA Football Association (Safa) emergency committee met Sexwale at OR Tambo International Airport last night to ask for clarity on his campaign after weeks of uncertainty and after listening to the man himself, they elected to leave the final decision to CAF.

CAF officials will meet in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday to decide on which candidate to support in the race to succeed Sepp Blatter as Fifa president.

Safa president Danny Jordaan said while the expectation from the public was that the SA mother body would nail its colours to the mast and announce whether it would continue to support Sexwale or dump him after yesterday's meeting, they decided to rather listen to CAF first.

"I know you wanted a yes or a no, but the first port of call is that this is a matter that should be discussed by CAF. There's not a lot to ask or answer," Jordaan said.

"We will be present when CAF announce their decision. Whoever they endorse will have a significant advantage in this race. It would be extraordinary if you are a candidate, you don't get the backing of Africa (but still go on to win the election). But there are a lot of what ifs, and we cannot speculate because there is a possibility that Mr Sexwale might still get Africa's vote."

Sexwale declined to comment to the gathered media last night and he left without indicating whether he still enjoys Safa's support or has been kicked to the curb.
