Jomo Sono perched on a table and mused in characteristically grandiose fashion that he had taken some personal satisfaction from Jomo Cosmos's 1-0 Absa Premiership victory against Orlando Pirates at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

Cosmos earned a crucial three points that increased their buffer on second-last Pretoria University.

"I love beating Pirates," Sono said. "I don't have any grudges but I just love beating them because they brought me up.

"If your father has taught you something, you have to go out and show him that, 'I learnt from you, and I'm better than you'."

Sono said he told his players, in a neat piece of reverse psychology ahead of their showdown against the club at which he became a legend at in the 1970s, that they had not yet shown their worth at PSL level.

"I told my players: 'You're not good enough. You're lying to the public if you think you're good enough. You have to go out there and fight because you're not yet ready to compete with anyone in the PSL'.

"But it was a motivational strategy on my side. And they went out to prove to me they're Premier League players. But I still believe they're not there yet."

Charlton Mashumba's breakaway strike earned victory for a Cosmos side who fought to close down the spaces on the Olen Park pitch.

"Pirates are a very good team. So we made sure whoever had the ball, they didn't enjoy it," Sono said.

"This win will help the players a lot. I believe we are not relegation candidates."

Sono said Cosmos are in the process of signing Sibusiso Khumalo on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.
