KZN derby off after Cele shock

The Premier Soccer League has confirmed that the KwaZulu-Natal derby clash between Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows has been postponed due to Mondli Cele's death.

THE Premier Soccer League has confirmed that the KwaZulu-Natal derby clash between Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows has been postponed due to Mondli Cele's death.

The game was set to take place on Saturday at Chatsworth Stadium but will be played at a later date.

The United forward died early on Sunday in a car accident in Pietermaritzburg.

His funeral will take place at eFolweni near Umkomaas on Saturday.

Maritzburg chairman Farouk Kadodia also confirmed yesterday that Cele's memorial service will take place on Thursday in Pietermaritzburg.

He said a psychologist would help the players deal with the trauma of Cele's tragic passing.

"The final funeral arrangements will be announced during the course of the week but we know the funeral will take place at eFolweni in Umkomaas.

"We will miss Cele. He was starting to find form at the right stage of the season and had fitted in very well in Ernst Middendorp's plans. The fact that he scored two goals in two games was a sign that he was regaining his good touch," Kadodia said.

"The players are taking the passing of Cele very badly because they were very close to him. We have put processes in place to see how best can the counselling be done.

"We are engaging a psychologist who specialises with trauma situations."

The Cele family spokesperson, Cindy Cele, was at pains to describe the feeling of the family following Mondli's shock death.

"The father is not in the best of shape but as most men do, they often take such situations on the chin and put on a brave face.

"The mother and the rest of the family are equally shattered," Cele said.
