10-bout fight feast at Emperors Palace

A storm of flailing leather could blow away Emperors Palace when Golden Gloves and African Ring present the Prospect at the Palace, a 10-bout card of four-rounders featuring boxers aspiring to turn professional.

That was the case last October when veteran promoters Rodney Berman and Jeff Ellis staged a similar tournament of four-rounders at the same imposing casino venue in Kempton Park - it was non-stop action from all 22 young boxers who fought their hearts out.

Fight fans, mostly family members of the fighters, were transported back to the good old days when Sunday afternoons were boxing days.

The upcoming tournament features Dee Jay Kriel, Joshua Studdard, Brendan Thysse, Nyelisani Thagambega, Lucky Mongebane and Leron Myles, all victors last year.

Berman and Ellis have included on the bill for February 7 Ronald Malindi, Jeffrey Magagane, Michael Mokoena and Tulani Mbenge, SA's only boxing medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Kriel will face Morabedi Khotle at junior flyweight, and Studdard and Mthobisi Nkosi will do battle in the junior bantamweight class.

Thysse will welcome Phillip Dlamini in the middleweight division, and Thagambega and Sihle Lelwane will meet at junior flyweight, with Mongebane taking on Matson Sando in the lightweight.

Mbenge and Andile Mabalusa will face off at the welterweight, while Myles and Friston Kabamba will fight at light heavyweight.

Malindi will take on Thamsanqa Cele at bantamweight, and Magagane and Stanley Mtsuenyane will do battle at welterweight.

Mokoena and Silas Sithole complete the bill with their lightweight bout. Action begins at 2.30pm.
