Nomvethe's so 'happy to be home'

New AmaZulu signing Siyabonga Nomvethe says joining the club is a win-win situation for him, after penning a six-month deal.

The former Moroka Swallows forward, who was born 38 years ago in KwaMashu, has finally returned home almost two decades after he last played for a club from his home province. "Bhele" left African Wanderers for Kaizer Chiefs in 1998 and has since played in Italy, Sweden and Denmark.

On his return to KwaZulu-Natal to play for AmaZulu, the Premier Soccer League's all-time leading goalscorer with 119 goals told Sowetan that he is looking forward to helping the club return to the top flight and being around his loved ones.

"It feels good to be home after all the years away. It is good for me because I can now be closer to my family as well," he said.

Nomvethe is expected to play a big role that will extend beyond the playing field as coach Steve Barker expects him to guide the younger players off the field and the former Bafana Bafana striker, who was capped 82 times and scored 16 goals, is up for the challenge.

"I have three goals in the First Division this season and I want to add more for AmaZulu. I have to work hard to help the club to get back to the top and make sure that there is something positive that happens during my time with the club. The people at the club are very excited to have me here and I should also make them happy," Nomvethe vowed.

AmaZulu are eighth in the NFD with 19 points from 14 matches, while log leaders Baroka have 31.
