Youngster Phete shares debut day with Mahlangu

There were two significant debuts for South Africans in Europe this past weekend with two players in contrasting stages of their careers.

May Mahlangu made his debut for Belgian side Sint-Truiden when he came off the bench with 20 minutes remaining in a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Mouscron-Peruwelz.

The Bafana Bafana midfielder played his first competitive minutes since featuring for the national team against Angola in June.

But he couldn't help his side to the win against the Belgian league strugglers and will now look forward to a cup clash with Standard Liege on Wednesday to claim his first victory at the club where Benni McCarthy is assistant coach.

Young Thibang Phete, like Mahlangu a product of Farouk Khan's Stars of Africa Academy, made his top-flight debut for Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes.

Phete was a surprise pick and was replaced at half time, but it is still a giant step forward in his career as his side came from behind to win 2-1 at Boavista.

Ayanda Patosi played the full game for Lokeren as they returned to winning ways with a 2-1 success at Charleroi, while Darren Keet was in goal for Kortrijk as they cruised past Waasland-Beveren with a 3-1 success to move up to fifth in the table.

The terror alert in Belgium continued to affect matches as Ntuthuko Radebe saw his game for second-tier Eupen against Antwerp called off by authorities as they battled to find available police personnel for the match.

Mandla Masango played the full game for Danish side Randers FC as they won 1-0 at home to Nordsjaelland to keep alive their slender hopes of winning the title this season.

Kagisho Dikgacoi was missing for Championship side Cardiff City in their 2-2 draw with Burnley as flu hit their squad.

Kamohelo Mokotjo's nightmare season at FC Twente in the Netherlands continued as his side were beaten 3-1 at home by fellow strugglers Willem II for a fifth straight defeat.

Anele Ngcongca was still missing for French Ligue 1 side Troyes as they lost at Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Paris St Germain, with the Swede getting on the scoresheet in a 4-1 success.

Daylon Claasen featured in an eight-goal thriller for German Bundesliga II side 1860 Munich as they played to a 4-4 draw at Paderborn.
