Sithole gets nod for Gauteng awards

The finalists for the Gauteng Sports Awards have been announced.

Wheelchair tennis star Lucas Sithole received the most individual nominations as he stands a chance of claiming awards in two categories.

The world No2 ranked wheelchair tennis player is nominated for the sportsman with a disability category alongside Paralympics athletes Andrea Dalle Ave and Pieter du Preez.

Sithole is also up for the grand prize of sports personality of the year with Banyana Banyana captain Janine van Wyk and cyclist William Mokgopo.

Olympic medallist swimmer Cameron van der Burgh will also be vying for the sportsman of the year award against SA sprinter Akani Simbine and volleyball's Dalane Dube.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony that will be held on October 11.

Selected finalists in the various categories are:

lSportswoman with a disability - Masego Mokhine (wheelchair basketball), Bonita Blankenberg (motor rally) and Kgothaso Montjane (wheelchair tennis);

lSportsman with a disability - Lucas Sithole (wheelchair tennis), Andrea Dalle Ave (athletics) and Pieter du Preez (parasport);

lSports team with disability - Ricoh Pumas Wheelchair Basketball team, Mixed Leg, Trunk and Arms Coxed Four Para Rowing team and Deaf Volleyball team (girls);

lAdministrator of the year - Fran Hilton-Smith (soccer), Nick Bester (athletics) and Carol Blignaut (cricket);

lCoach of the year - Nkosilathi Moyo (volleyball), Emmarie Fouche (athletics) and Pierre de Bryn (cricket);

lMost promising team - Pretoria Technical High School (First XV rugby), Gauteng Ladies Wheelchair Basketball team and Troyeville Primary School under-13 volleyball team;

lSportsman of the year - Dalane Bhekani (volleyball), Cameron van der Burgh (swimming) and Akani Simbine (athletics); and

lSportswoman of the year - Danisha Patel (table tennis), Caroline Wostmann (athletics) and Jeanine van Kradenburg (archery).
