'Rolling Thunder' in Thohoyandou

South African heavyweight boxing champion Anton ''Rolling Thunder" Nel should be too experienced for Sithembile August when they collide at Thohoyandou Town Hall in Limpopo on September 25, the champion's promoter Andre Thysse told Sowetan yesterday.

Nel, pictured, has been around since 1992 and has won 19 fights, 15 of which by knockout. He has 12 losses and three draws.

The boxer from Nigel, eastern Gauteng, is still fresh from a second-round stoppage of Donovan Luff last month. Nel has fought top boxers, including Jacob "9mm" Mofokeng, who is the first black SA heavyweight champion from Free State, and will bid for the second defence against August.

August is a novice from Port Elizabeth - he only has three wins from eight bouts - and it remains a mystery how he was sanctioned for a bout of this magnitude.

Thysse's confirmation of the Nel v August fight puts an end to rumours the 47-year-old champion had pulled out due to an illness.

''The fight is definitely on next week," Thysse said.

''Look, I had advised Anton to go and see the doctor because his blood pressure balloons a few days before every fight. Anton then had a slight problem with his leg. Doctor Saad [Steven] booked him off from training.

''Saad gave him the go-head yesterday because he said it was nothing serious."

Thysse said Nel's career would come to an end in December. ''At 47 years old you do not know what can happen to Anton," he said.

In the other bouts, WBO International bantamweight champion Klaas Mboyane will face Cebo Ngema for the vacant WBF Inter-Continental belt. Sydney Maluleke and Godfrey Nemukongwe will fight in a 12-rounder for the WBF Inter-Continental featherweight title. WBF Africa middleweight champion Bongani Mlotshwa will defend against Page Tshesane from Mpumalanga. The tournament is staged by Champions Boxing Promotions of Phathutshedzo Dongola and bankrolled by Limpopo department of sports, arts and culture.
