Cale out to end MTN8 hoodoo

Veteran Ajax Cape Town winger Franklin Cale may not have happy memories of MTN8 finals but could write a new chapter when the Urban Warriors take on Kaizer Chiefs in this year's decider at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

Some of Cale's lowest moments in football have come in the top eight decider where he has been on the losing side in Ajax and SuperSport United colours.

Cale has, in fact, appeared in six previous knockout deciders across all competitions, with just a single success.

"I have been to so many cup finals before and hardly won so it would be very special for me if we can win this one," he said.

Cale was used as an emergency left back in the 2009 MTN8 decider and was part of a defence that was cruelly exposed as Ajax were hammered 6-0 by Lamontville Golden Arrows.

He scored an early goal for SuperSport in the 2012 MTN8 final against Moroka Swallows, but watched as Zeca Marques's side overturned the deficit to win 2-1.

Cale has also tasted defeat in two Nedbank Cup finals, one each for SuperSport and Ajax.

He was also a substitute for Ajax when they lost 3-0 to Platinum Stars in the Telkom Knockout decider in 2006, but was part of the Urban Warriors team that beat Orlando Pirates two years later.
