Promoters push on despite TV blackout

Several promoters are pushing ahead with plans to develop boxers despite facing a continuing blackout of their tournaments on television.

Promoters Ntsikayezwe Sigcawu, Rodney Berman, Jeff Ellis, Sonja Fernandes, Anton Gilmore and Andre Thysse say they are not bothered by the lack of television coverage and will continue to groom future fighters without much fanfare.

Sigcawu announced yesterday that his Isizwe Boxing Promotions will organise nine bouts in six weight divisions at Willowvale indoor sports centre in Butterworth, Eastern Cape, on Saturday.

He said his programme will be headlined by an international female eight-rounder between current SA bantamweight champion Bukiwe Nonina and Zimbabwean Patience Masitara.

Sinethemba Mncane from Mthatha will take on Vuyani Masondo from Mdantsane in the main supporting bout over six rounds in the lightweight class.

Masande Mendile and Mzukisi Ben will do battle in the welterweights class. All the remaining bouts will be contested over four rounds. Sigcwau said action will begin at 1pm.

Then on October 4, associate promoters Berman and Ellis of Golden Gloves and African Ring will jointly stage the ''Prospect at the Palace" tournament at Emperors Palace.

Their tournament will feature 10 bouts in five weight divisions.
