Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela said football is not a circus as he claimed he caught fourth official Olani Kwinda laughing after an incident in his side's 1-1 draw with Polokwane City on Tuesday night.

Komphela was also not impressed with referee Lwandile Mfiki, who had a poor match at Peter Mokaba Stadium, and says he told the man in the middle exactly what he thought of his officiating on the night.

At first Komphela was reluctant to talk about the performance of the officials, but he could not hold back once he got going as he let rip after being asked about the physicality of the match.

"I told the referee he was losing the match. That is why when Yeye [Reneilwe Letsholonyane] got kicked I had to go on the field and intervene. We do not need that. Referees must be in control. We want to give them absolute power to take charge. That can only happen if they have the authority," Komphela said after the match.

"Sometimes they take things lightly. You stand next to a fourth official and something happens and he is laughing. It happened tonight and you ask yourself if you are at a circus. We are at work here. People's lives are at stake here."

Komphela bemoaned his side's failure to make the most of their dominance in the first half.

City striker Puleng Tlolane scored just after the hour mark to cancel out Eric Mathoho's first- half strike.

"We should have killed [off] the match in the first half. We should have at least scored three goals," Komphela said.

Chiefs host Bloem Celtic next in an MTN8 semifinal second leg match at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
